Her Storyജീവിതരേഖ

She grew up watching her father write — and the ink never left her.

Seba Joy Kanam is a Malayalam novelist, poet and songwriter. She is the daughter of Kanam E. J. (Elavunkal John Philip), one of the great popular voices of twentieth-century Malayalam literature, whose serialised novels filled the weeklies and whose stories reached the screen twenty-three times.

For close to four decades she has lived in Nizwa, in the Sultanate of Oman, writing across forms — fiction, verse and song — and contributing regularly to literary publications in Kerala and across the diaspora. Her literary service to the Malayali community of Oman was honoured as early as 2013, marking twenty-five years of contribution by then — a body of work that now spans more than three decades. Her writing moves between the novel and the lyric with the same ease her father's once did.

A fuller biography is being prepared, drawn from her own telling.

13 June 1926 — 13 June 1982 · born and gone on the same date

A doyen of twentieth-century Malayalam literature. Best known as E. J. Philip, he began as a schoolteacher in the C. M. S. schools of Kanam, Mundakayam, Kumbalampoyka and Kottayam, and wrote his first novels in the pages of Malayala Manorama Aazhchapathippu. In 1967 he founded his own weekly, Manorajyam. Across his life he wrote more than one hundred and twenty novels and seven or eight plays, of which twenty-three were brought to the screen — among them Kalyumkamini, Kaliyodam, Agnimrugam, Swargaputhri, Dathuputhran, Bharya, Himavahini, Aval Vishwasthayayirunnu and Edanthottam. He also wrote the songs for several of his films, beginning with Yamini in 1973.

In November 2023, his daughter — the author of this site — produced a documentary on his life and work, Kanam E. J. — A Documentary, telecast on Doordarshan Malayalam. Two years later, in 2025, the literary foundation established in his name conferred its Sahitya Puraskaram on her own novel — a daughter receiving an award instituted in her father's name, for her own work. The lineage closed quietly into itself.
