He took the name of his village as his own. Kanam — a word that means forest — is a green, inland village on the eastern edge of Kottayam district, past Manarcad, Pampady and Vazhoor. The boy born there in 1926 to John and Annamma made that name a signature that a whole generation of Malayalis would come to love.
He served for a time in the army, but the pull of writing brought him home. He completed the Sahitya Visaradan course and became a teacher, serving in the CMS schools at Kanam, Kumbalampoyka, Mundakayam and Kottayam. Among his pupils was the future Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Deeply read in Sanskrit and a gifted orator, he was, above all, a friend to ordinary people — the farmers and labourers who worked the fields from dawn to dusk and who waited at the little roadside shops in the evening to buy the weeklies.
It was while teaching that he began publishing novels in the Malayala Manorama weekly — serialised stories that readers followed week to week. Many of his most loved serials first appeared there: അവൾ വിശ്വസ്തയായിരുന്നു, യമുനേ നീ ഒഴുകൂ, നിഷാദം, ഇരിക്കൂ സംസാരിക്കാം, ഏദൻതോട്ടം. In 1967 he left teaching for the pen entirely and founded his own weekly, Manorajyam. He is counted among the writers who, in the 1960s, first built the reading habit in ordinary Malayalis — the man who first wrote the "long story" with the ingredients to hold a reader.
He wrote from a reclining chaaru kasera in the shade of the trees crowding his yard, watching the rings of smoke from a Dinesh beedi, walking the sanded courtyard at dusk to touch and talk to his plants. In his stories you can always see the world he lived in. He died on 13 June 1987 — the very date he was born — as the family was preparing to celebrate his birthday. The parting was sudden. But the writer of imperishable, romantic art lives on in countless hearts.

The birth of a song ഒരു ഗാനം പിറന്ന കഥ
Of all his songs, "Thirayum theeravum" from Aval Vishwasthayayirunnu (1978) is the one every Malayali carries — though few know who wrote it. In her essay, Amma tells the story of the afternoon at Kottayam's Hotel Ambassador when Kanam read the lines aloud and Arjunan Master leapt from his chair: "In Vani Jayaram's voice, this song will scale the heights."

Long before the novels and the films, the young writer turned his pen on injustice. This poem, written in 1950, is a searing piece of social witness: a പറയൻ labourer, Murukan, begs the landlord for one more month before eviction — his wife Kurumi is about to give birth. The landlord refuses, strikes him, and sets fire to the hut with Kurumi and her mother still inside. The police come — and arrest Murukan, for arson.

His daughter, the writer Seba Joy Kanam, remembers her father. A version of this essay was published in Madhyamam on 13 June 2026 as "മണ്ണിനോടും മനുഷ്യനോടും പ്രണയത്തിലായ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ".

2026 – June 13 ആകുമ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം മൺമറഞ്ഞിട്ട് മുപ്പത്തി ഒൻപതു വർഷങ്ങൾ ആകുന്നു. പക്ഷേ ഇന്നും ഓരോ ദിവസവും അദ്ദേഹം ജീവിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്നും സഹൃദയർ എന്നോട് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പറ്റി സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
അക്ഷരജ്ഞാനം കുറവായിരുന്ന സാധാരണക്കാരായ ജനങ്ങളെ വായനയുടെ ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുവന്നത് കാനം ആയിരുന്നു. പാടത്തും, പറമ്പിലും പുലരുമ്പോൾ മുതൽ സന്ധ്യ വരെ വിയർപ്പൊഴുക്കി പണിയുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടുകാരനായിരുന്നു കാനത്തിന്റെ കഥകൾ. ജോലിയും കഴിഞ്ഞ് തളർന്നെത്തുന്നവർ മാടക്കടകൾക്ക് മുൻപിൽ കാത്തുനിന്ന് മനോരമയും, മനോരാജ്യവും, മംഗളവും, മാമാങ്കവും അത്യുത്സാഹത്തോടെ വാങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകും. മനോരമ വാരികയിലാണ് കാനം ഒരു പാട് നോവലുകൾ എഴുതിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. 'അവൾ വിശ്വസ്തയായിരുന്നു, യമുനേ നീ ഒഴുകൂ, നിഷാദം, ഇരിക്കൂ സംസാരിക്കാം, ഏദൻതോട്ടം' എന്നിങ്ങനെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക പ്രശസ്തമായ തുടർനോവലുകൾ മനോരമ വാരികയാണ് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്.
പിന്നീട് ധാരാളം ജനപ്രിയ സാഹിത്യകാരന്മാർ വന്നെങ്കിലും ഇവരുടെയെല്ലാം ഗുരുസ്ഥാനീയൻ കാനമായിരുന്നു.
ശ്രീ കാനം, മുണ്ടക്കയം, കുമ്പളാംപൊയ്ക, കാനം സി.എം.എസ് സ്കൂൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകനായി സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. കാനം എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ വികസനത്തിനും, സാമൂഹിക ഉന്നമനത്തിനും, രാഷ്ട്രീയ ഉന്നതിക്കും ആയി നിരന്തര പരിശ്രമം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. രാഷ്ട്രീയം കോൺഗ്രസ്സിനൊപ്പം ആയിരുന്നു. ശ്രീ: ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടിയുടെ അദ്ധ്യാപകൻ ആയിരുന്നു.
മലയാളത്തിൻറെ അഭിമാനവും, ആത്മഹർഷവും വിലമതിക്കാനാവാത്ത സമ്പത്തുമായിരുന്നു ശ്രീ കാനം. മലയാളികളുടെ വായനയുടെ മാസ്മരിക ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയത് അദ്ദേഹമാണ്. കുടുംബ ബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ ചൂടും, ചൂരും പകർന്നു നൽകി അവരെ ആത്മനിർവൃതിയിലാറാടിച്ചു.
സാഹിത്യ വിശാരദൻ കോഴ്സ് പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ അദ്ദേഹം, കാനം, കുമ്പളാംപൊയ്ക, മുണ്ടക്കയം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ സി.എം.എസ് സ്കൂളുകളിൽ അധ്യാപകനായിരിക്കെയാണ് മലയാള മനോരമ ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിൽ നോവലുകൾ എഴുതിത്തുടങ്ങിയത്. എങ്കിലും എഴുത്തിനോടുള്ള കമ്പം മൂലം അധ്യാപക ജോലിയിൽ നിന്നും വിരമിച്ചു. 1967-ൽ സ്വന്തമായി മനോരാജ്യം വാരിക ആരംഭിച്ചു. പമ്പാ നദി പാഞ്ഞൊഴുകുന്നു, കാട്ടുമങ്ക, ഹൈറേഞ്ച്, ഈ അരയേക്കർ നിന്റേതാണ്, തുടങ്ങി പ്രസിദ്ധമായ 150 ഓളം നോവലുകൾ, ഏഴോളം നാടകങ്ങൾ, ബൈബിൾ കഥകൾ, കവിതകൾ, ഇരുപതോളം ചലച്ചിത്രങ്ങൾ, തിരക്കഥകൾ, സിനിമാഗാനങ്ങൾ ഇവയൊക്കെയും കാനം സാഹിത്യ ലോകത്തിനു നൽകിയ സമഗ്ര സംഭാവനകൾ ആണ്. സംസ്കൃതത്തിലും അഗാധമായ പാണ്ഡിത്യമുള്ള അദ്ദേഹം നല്ലൊരു പ്രസംഗികൻ കൂടിയായിരുന്നു.
കാനം അഥവാ 'കാട്' എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന ഉൾനാടൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ ഹരിതഭംഗി നുകർന്നെടുത്ത് കാനം എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരൻ മനോഹരവും, ഹൃദയത്തെ തൊട്ടുണർത്തുന്നതുമായ കഥകൾ എഴുതിത്തുടങ്ങിയ കാലം! 1940 മുതൽ 80 വരെയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം കലാരംഗത്തെ സുവർണ്ണപ്രതിഭയായി വിരാജിച്ചു. കർഷകരെയും, കാർഷിക വൃത്തിയെയും കൂട്ടിയിണക്കി ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങൾ കോർത്തിണക്കി ഹൃദയത്തെ തൊട്ടുണർത്തും വിധം കാനം കഥകളെഴുതി. വശ്യസുന്ദരമായ ആ ശൈലിയെ കേരളീയർ രണ്ടു കൈയ്യും നീട്ടി സ്വീകരിച്ചു.
കാനം എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ നാമം, തൂലികാനാമമായി സ്വീകരിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുത്ത് ഒരു തപസ്യയായി തുടർന്നു. പേരുപോലെ മനോഹാരിതയാർന്ന കാനം എന്ന കാനനഭംഗി നിറഞ്ഞ ഈ ഗ്രാമം, കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ മണർകാട്, പാമ്പാടി, വാഴൂർ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞാണ്.
കാനം ഇ.ജെ.യുടെ എഴുത്തുകൾ അന്നും, ഇന്നും പുതുമയുള്ളവയാണ്. ആശയും, നിരാശയും, പ്രണയവും, വിരഹവും, സന്തോഷവും ദുഃഖവുമെല്ലാം ഇടർന്ന കഥകൾ ഒരു കുളിർമഴയായി പെയ്തിറങ്ങിയ സരളമായ ശൈലി മലയാളികളുടെ ഹൃദയം കവർന്നെടുത്തു. കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഗ്രാമീണ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചകളുടെയും, അനുഭവസാക്ഷ്യങ്ങളുടെയും സങ്കലനമായിരുന്നു ഈ എഴുത്തുകൾ — ഓർമ്മകളിലെ പൂത്തുലയുന്ന വസന്തമായി സുഗന്ധം വിടർത്തി ഇന്നും പൂവുകൾ ചൂടുന്നു.
നല്ലൊരു മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹിയായിരുന്നു. വിമർശനങ്ങളെ വിലയ്ക്കെടുത്തിരുന്നില്ല. ജനങ്ങൾ നൽകിയിരുന്ന ആദരവുകൾ അവാർഡുകളായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു. തിരുവല്ല അമ്മാളു കുട്ടി കൊലക്കേസ് ആധാരമാക്കി നിർമ്മിച്ച 'ഭാര്യ' എന്ന ചലച്ചിത്രം ഏറെ ജനപ്രീതി നേടി. വിവാദവിഷയമായ ഈ സംഭവം തങ്ങളുടെ കഥയാണെന്ന് വാദിച്ച് ചിലർ രംഗത്തുവന്നു. കലാകാരന്റെ ഭാവനയാണ് എന്നായിരുന്നു കാനത്തിന്റെ മറുപടി.
ദുഃഖിതരോടും, നിന്ദിതരോടും കൂറുള്ള വലിയ മനസ്സിന്റെ ഉടമയായ ഇദ്ദേഹം, നിന്ദിതരുടെയും പീഡിതരുടെയും സങ്കടങ്ങൾ ക്ഷമയോടെ കേട്ട് സ്നേഹത്തോടെ അവരോട് ചേർന്നിരിക്കും. സൗഹൃദങ്ങൾക്ക് അങ്ങേയറ്റം വില കൽപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിശാല മനസ്കൻ! പ്രശസ്തനായ കാർട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ് ടോംസും, സാഹിത്യകാരൻ തോമസ് ടി. അമ്പാട്ടും, മംഗളം വർഗ്ഗീസും, ജേസ്സിയും, മറ്റൊരു പാട് പ്രശസ്തരും സുഹൃദ് വലയം അലങ്കരിച്ചിരുന്നു.
കാനത്തിന്റെ നോവലുകളിലെല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിത പരിസരങ്ങൾ കാണാൻ കഴിയും. മുറ്റത്തു തിങ്ങി നിറഞ്ഞ മരങ്ങളുടെ തണലിൽ ചാഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന ചാരു കസേരയിലിരുന്നാണ് കഥകൾ രൂപം കൊള്ളുന്നത്. പുകയുന്ന ദിനേശ് ബീഡിയുടെ വളയങ്ങൾ നോക്കി ചിന്തയുടെ തേരിലങ്ങനെ പറന്നു നടക്കും, ആ പ്രകൃതിയുടെ കൂട്ടുകാരൻ.
സായാഹ്നങ്ങളിൽ മണൽവിരിച്ച വിശാലമായ മുറ്റത്തുകൂടി ഉലാത്തി ചെടികളോട് കുശലം പറഞ്ഞു തൊട്ടു തലോടും. കവിതകൾ വിരിയുന്ന കരങ്ങളുള്ള ആ കലാകാരന്റെ കരങ്ങൾ തഴുകുമ്പോൾ ചെടികൾ പുളകം കൊണ്ടു പൂക്കൾ പൊട്ടി വിരിയും. കൂമ്പി നിൽക്കുന്ന മൊട്ടുകളെ നോക്കി നിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ അടുത്ത കഥാതന്തു വിരിയുകയായി.
പച്ചത്തഴപ്പിന്റെ വശ്യതയേറുന്ന ഈ കൊച്ചുഗ്രാമം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സ്വന്തമായി കരുതി സ്നേഹിച്ചു. മാനുഷികജീവിതങ്ങളെ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാനും, മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാനുമുള്ള കഴിവ് അപാരമായിരുന്നു. കുടുംബ ബന്ധങ്ങൾക്കും, കുടുംബ കഥകൾക്കും മുൻതൂക്കം നൽകി.
സ്വന്തമായി മനോരാജ്യം വാരിക സ്ഥാപിച്ചു എങ്കിലും കാലക്രമേണ അത് കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. നൂറ്റി ഇരുപതിലേറെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നാടകങ്ങൾ, ബൈബിൾ കഥകൾ, കവിതകൾ, തിരക്കഥകൾ, സിനിമാഗാനങ്ങൾ, സിനിമകൾ ഇവയെല്ലാം അതീവ മനോഹരം! അന്നു പട്ടാളത്തിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു എങ്കിലും — എഴുത്തിനോടുള്ള അഭിനിവേശം മൂലം തിരികെ നാട്ടിൽ വന്നു. സാഹിത്യ വിശാരദൻ കോഴ്സ് പൂർത്തിയാക്കി, അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിത്തീർന്നു. മല്ലപ്പള്ളി കുടുംബാംഗവും, അദ്ധ്യാപികയുമായിരുന്ന ശ്രീമതി പി.ഐ. ശോശാമ്മയായിരുന്നു സഹധർമ്മിണി. സോഫി, സാലി, സാജൻ, സൂസൻ, സേബാ എന്നിവർ മക്കളും, എം. ഐസക്ക് (കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബി.), മാത്യു എൻ ഏബ്രഹാം (Advocate), സിസി സാജൻ, എം.വി പൗലോസ് (Advocate), തൂമ്പുങ്കൽ മാത്യു ജോയ് (മസ്കറ്റ്) എന്നിവർ ജാമാതാക്കളുമാണ്. സ്മിത, എഡ്ഡിൻ, എബിൻ, ആശ, സ്വപ്ന, ഏബ്രഹാം, സോണിയ, ഫിലിപ്പ്, മൻജിമ, അഞ്ജന, ജിബു ജോയ് എന്നിവർ പേരക്കുട്ടികൾ!
അറുപതികളിൽ മലയാളികളിൽ വായനാശീലം വളർത്തി, വായനക്കാരെ ആകർഷിക്കാനുള്ള ചേരുവകൾ ചേർത്ത് ആദ്യമായി നീണ്ട കഥകൾ എഴുതിയതു കാനം ഇ.ജെ. യാണ്. തിരുവല്ലയിലെ അമ്മാളു കുട്ടി കൊലക്കേസ് ആധാരമാക്കി എഴുതിയ 'ഭാര്യ' ഏറെ ജനപ്രീതി നേടി. ഈ നോവലിനെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയാണ് ഉദയാ സ്റ്റുഡിയോ 'ഭാര്യ' എന്ന ചലച്ചിത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. ചിത്രം സൂപ്പർ ഹിറ്റായി. പക്ഷേ ഇതെന്റെ കഥയാണെന്ന് അവകാശപ്പെട്ട് ചിലർ കേസ് കൊടുത്തു. കഥയിൽ ചോദ്യമില്ല എന്നും, ഇത് കലാകാരന്റെ ഭാവനയാണെന്നും ആയിരുന്നു ഉത്തരം. ജാതി മത ഭേദചിന്തകളിൽ വിശ്വസിക്കാത്ത ഒരു മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹിയായിരുന്നു.
കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ കിഴക്കൻ അതിർത്തി ഗ്രാമമായ കാനത്തിൽ 1926 ജൂൺ മാസം പതിമൂന്നാം തീയതി ജോൺ, അന്നമ്മ ദമ്പതികളുടെ മകനായി പിറന്ന ഇലവുങ്കൽ ജോൺ ഫിലിപ്പ് 1987 ജൂൺ മാസം പതിമൂന്നാം തീയതി മരണത്തെ പുൽകി മാഞ്ഞു എങ്കിലും, കാൽപ്പനികതയുടെ മരിക്കാത്ത കലാകാരനായി ഇന്നും അനേക ജന ഹൃദയങ്ങളിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നു.
സംഭാഷണമെഴുതുന്നതില് കാനത്തിന് അസാധാരണമായ സിദ്ധിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഹൃദയസ്പര്ശിയായ ഒരു ജനപ്രിയനോവലായിരുന്നു അധ്യാപിക. സ്ത്രീകളുടെ ആവശ്യങ്ങളെയും ആഗ്രഹങ്ങളെയും ഇതിവൃത്തത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രത്തില് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ച ഒരു നോവല്. നീലാ പ്രൊഡക്ഷന്സിനു വേണ്ടി പി. സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യം ഈ നോവല് ചലച്ചിത്രമാക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. പത്മിനി, ശാന്തി, അംബിക, മധു, തിക്കുറിശ്ശി, കൊട്ടാരക്കര തുടങ്ങിയവരഭിനയിച്ച അധ്യാപിക 1968-ല് പ്രദര്ശനത്തിനെത്തി. ജനപ്രിയം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞ് ഏതെങ്കിലും നോവലിനെ തള്ളിക്കളയാനോ ആഘോഷിക്കാനോ തുനിയരുത് എന്നു പറയുന്ന നിരൂപകരുണ്ട്. അവരെങ്കിലും കാനം ഇ.ജെ. യുടെ മഹത്ത്വം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നെങ്കില്!
നോവലുകളിൽ നിന്നും സിനിമയിലേക്കുള്ള കഥാ പാരമ്പര്യം ആദ്യമായി കൊണ്ടു വന്നത് ശ്രീ: കാനം ആണ്. ഫാമിലി ഓറിയെന്റഡ് മലയാളം സിനിമയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ സോളിഡ് ഫൗണ്ടേഷനും ശ്രീ: കാനം തന്നെ. ഒറ്റവാക്കിൽ പറഞ്ഞാൽ കാനം ഇ.ജെ യില്ലാതെ മലയാളം സിനിമയിലെ സ്വർണ്ണ യുഗം പിറവി എടുക്കുകയില്ലായിരുന്നു എന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം. 🙏
കൃഷിയും, യഥാർത്ഥ ജീവിതവും കൈ കോർത്തു ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഇടത്തരം ജനങ്ങളുടെ ആത്മ സംഘർഷങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു കുളിർ കാറ്റു പോലെ തണുപ്പേകിയ ആ കഥകളിൽ വറീച്ചനും, മേരിയുമെല്ലാം പ്രണയാർദ്രതയിൽ പെട്ടൊഴുകി. കാനം പറഞ്ഞ കഥകൾ ഗ്രാമീണരുടേതായിരുന്നു. എഴുത്തിലെ കാവ്യ ഭംഗിയും, ലളിത മനോഹരമായ ഭാഷാ ശൈലിയും കാനം ഇ.ജെ എന്ന സാഹിത്യകാരനെ വേറിട്ടു നിർത്തി. പദ പരിചയവും, ഭാഷാ സമ്പത്തും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൃതികളെ മികവുറ്റതാക്കി.
തന്നെ അംഗീകരിക്കേണ്ട രീതിയിൽ അംഗീകരിക്കാതെ, അപമാനിച്ചവരോട് പ്രതികരിക്കാതെയും — ചവിട്ടിത്താഴ്ത്തിയവരെ നോക്കി ഹൃദ്യമായി പുഞ്ചിരി തൂകിയ ഈ കലാസ്നേഹി ഓർമ്മയുടെ തീരങ്ങളിലെ നിലയ്ക്കാത്ത ഓളങ്ങളാണ്. നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ സൗമ്യതയുള്ള പുഞ്ചിരിയും, എല്ലാം മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്ന ബുദ്ധിയും ഉള്ള ആ അതുല്യ പ്രതിഭയ്ക്ക് ഒരായിരം സ്നേഹപ്രണാമം!
